Underpinning this eclectic program is the idea of the voice as an instrument at home within the lush accompaniment of bowed strings throughout the centuries, regardless of genre.

Versatile mezzo Wendy Gilles and Parthenia will inhabit the multilayered sound world of the Renaissance, with songs for voice and viols by Byrd, Gibbons, and other masters.

This exploration jumps forward some 400 years with songs by Kate Bush, Elvis Costello, and Catie Curtis in exquisite arrangements for voice and modern string quartet.

Songs by Joni Mitchell, Randy Newman, and Lucy Kaplansky will feature broad themes of home through the lens of familial or romantic love — home is where the heart is, after all.

The viols and modern strings will ultimately come together to form a unique, timeless ensemble to play songs by Michael Nyman; The Beatles; and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young — with the human voice at the heart of it all — at home.

Paolo Bordignon, harpsichordist, in recital

The harpsichord is not only the instrument epitomizing the High Baroque but also a vehicle for the refined expressiveness of the Rococo, the Empfindsamer Stil (sensitive style), and galant styles of the later eighteenth century. Join us for a program exploring some of this repertoire, including music of François Couperin, G.B. Martini, and a dazzling concerto by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach with an ensemble of  strings.

Jeff Morrissey, baritone

The visual centerpiece of St. Bartholomew’s Chapel is the 1919 Ethel Parsons Paullin and Telford Paullin mural Adoration of the Magi. Inspired by it and the 13 medallions that surround it, this program is a beautiful retelling of the Nativity of Christ with carols from around the world, spirituals, and popular Christmas favorites.

Alexander Pattavina, organist, in recital

Ring in the new year with a fun and festive concert at 11 pm, followed by a champagne reception at the stroke of midnight. With pipes sounding into the resplendent nave from the chancel, the rear gallery, and even above in the dome, the dynamic range and vast color palette of the Æolian-Skinner organ at St. Bartholomew’s is an experience to behold.

No tickets needed but a $20 donation is suggested, either in advance here or at the concert.

This recital continues St. Bartholomew’s decades-long tradition of organ recitals in Lent. Paolo Bordignon offers a 45-minute program including music of Charles-Marie Widor, Niels Gade, George Frideric Handel, and Louis Vierne.
